Three decades on Ponce, still glowing

Galaxy Diner opened on Ponce de Leon Avenue in 1993, when its founders — a short-order cook and a set designer — decided Atlanta deserved a diner that took fun seriously: retro-futurist chrome and neon, a menu that treated comfort food as craft, and doors that never locked. Three decades later the chrome is original, the neon is repaired rather than replaced, and the doors still don't lock. The city voted the place its best diner nine years running, which the staff attributes to the meatloaf and attributes the meatloaf to stubbornness.

The menu is classic diner done with care: hand-spun milkshakes in flavors that haven't changed since opening, meatloaf stacked high enough to require structural planning, breakfast at any hour because 4 a.m. is a perfectly reasonable time for hash browns, and a rotating pie case that empties by midnight. The patio out back is the only one in Midtown that stays open around the clock — a fact the after-shift nurses, chefs, and musicians of the neighborhood treat as essential infrastructure, which it is.
